Community of Christ and Community of Christ - British Isles have joined the more than 150 of signatories on an interfaith statement in support the United Nations Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. The treaty entered into force 22 January.

Community of Christ signed the interfaith statement in support of World Conference Resolution 1303 - Action toward Nuclear Weapons Abolition.

“At this historic moment, we must act decisively to strengthen the power of the TPNW upon its entry into force, and to work for peace, cooperation, and common security,” the interfaith statement says.

In addition to a comprehensive ban on nuclear weapons, the UN treaty also addresses the disproportionate effect of nuclear weapons on women and indigenous peoples and the importance of victim assistance and healing of environmental harms which align with Community of Christ Enduring Principles, Worth of All Persons and Sacredness of Creation.

Jan Kraybill's twenty-second Super Bowl Sunday Organ Concert will be an online performance, typical of the COVID-19 era. What's definitely not typical about the recorded event is Kraybill's use of three organ consoles at the Community of Christ Auditorium and Temple.

"Virtual Virtuosity: A tribute to all virtuosos of the COVID digital era" begins at 2:30 p.m. Central Standard Time on 7 February. The free event on the church's YouTube channel will be available for viewing for a limited time after the initial event.

Kraybill designed the concert to honor all who have faced the challenges of the COVID era with creativity and courage. Viewers also will learn interesting facts about seldom-seen parts of the headquarters complex.

Repertoire will include:

  • William Walton's Crown Imperial March (transcription by Herbert Murrill)
  • Herbert Howells' Psalm-Prelude Op. 32, No. 2 (on Psalm 37:11, "the meek shall inherit the earth")
  • J.S. Bach's Prelude and Fugue in G Major, BWV 541
  • Paul Manz' Partita on St. Anne ("O God Our Help in Ages Past")
  • Franklin D. Ashdown's Variations on "The Star-Spangled Banner"
  • Sigfrid Karg-Elert's O Gott, du frommer Gott ("O God, Thou Faithful God"), Op. 65, No. 50
  • Jehan Alain's Litanies

The guiding question first was asked by President Stephen Veazey in his closing sermon at the 2019 World Conference. The series is an entry point to ongoing conversation about nonviolence by reclaiming and deepening our understanding of first-century Jesus and how that affects us as his followers. The multimedia connection points are intended to create opportunities for discussion and education in response to World Conference Resolution 1319.

More on this series

Read: The Herald series began in the May/June issue with “Toward the Peaceful One: Jesus Christ in Restoration Perspective.” It is also online. The series continues through May/June 2021 with topics drawn from Doctrine and Covenants 163:4a-b exploring what nonviolence looks like from the perspective of the poor, displaced, mistreated, diseased, and more.
Discuss: Online groups will be offered via Zoom during February 2021, April, and June. Each gathering will feature a panel of authors and other speakers related to the topic.

Calgary Congregation Priesthood Requests for Change of Priesthood Status

1/20/2021

A few of our Priesthood members have approached me in the past couple of years expressing an interest in getting a change of status to their Priesthood, specifically to Emeritus status. I have not pursued this to any degree because I wanted to ensure that individuals are completely resolved in their desire to make this change. The new year provides us with a good opportunity to address this item for anyone who wishes to have their status changed. I have no inclination to “seek” changes in Priesthood status from anyone, but if any Priesthood wish to make this change in 2021, please contact me and I’ll help you proceed. We can also discuss the retained authorities and options that come with Emeritus status.

Doug Hayden, Pastor
