As we continue to study the guiding question, Are we moving toward Jesus, the Peaceful One?, a yearlong series of linked Herald magazine articles, videos, and live online discussions is underway.
Join us on 7 December for the next gathering where we will be discussing these two articles with authors Michael Wright and Elray Henrickson.
  • Herald article "Toward the Peaceful One: Jesus as Refugee"
  • Herald article "Toward the Peaceful One: Jesus as Sanctuary"
Online Discussion Group - Monday, December 7 at 7:30pm (CST)
Register Now
The series, found at www.CofChrist.org/guiding-question, is an entry point to ongoing conversation about nonviolence by reclaiming and deepening our understanding of first-century Jesus and how that affects us as his followers today.

The multimedia connection points are intended to create opportunities for discussion and education in response to World Conference Resolution 1319.

Demolition is complete!

Just three days ago demolition began on our new space. Hard to believe it’s already done! Check out those tall ceilings (look above the hanging fluorescent lights).

Seeing it empty certainly helps to visualize and dream new purpose into the space.

Circles of Sexuality Promo on Biteable.

In accordance with Harmony's mission to provide advocacy, education, and resources for Queer/LGBTQIA2S+ voices in Community of Christ, Harmony offers this four-part series with Sexologist Dr. Jill McDevitt. Feedback received from each workshop will inform the topics of subsequent workshops.

The purpose of this series is to provide Harmony members and the public with meaningful and science-based information concerning human sexuality and gender identity as well as insight into common areas of struggle for the Queer/LGBTQIA2S+ Community such as shame, intimacy, power and agency, pleasure, and more. This series is meant to provide individuals with accurate and thought-provoking information that has the power to improve lives.

This four-part series is
free to 2020 Harmony members (registration still required) and $10 USD for non-members. We hope you will join us as we learn together about common areas of struggle for the Queer/LGBTQIA2S+ Community.

Meeting link will only be shared with registrants. See full details below.

Some feedback Harmony received after the first session:

  • “This is such a great gift to the church from Harmony.”
  • “It was wonderful to see such vulnerability with church leaders present. So good!”
  • “Interesting watching as a family. We agreed at the start that our child would manage their own comfort level and feel free to go read if it became uncomfortable. They left for part of the sensuality circle but they came back. Really good. So respectful and helpful. Great to have this content.”

The theme for the second session (this Saturday, Oct. 24 @ 11 a.m. MDT) with Sexologist Dr. Jill McDevitt will be: "LGBTQIA2S+ Relationship 'Sexpectations.'"

SESSION DESCRIPTION:

This workshop uses interactive activities and small group discussion to examine the concept of “shoulding”. Participants will have the opportunity to explore and challenge the ways that religious expectations, LGBTQIA2S+ cultural norms, and taboos of society at large come together to apply social pressure of how relationships “should” be. Strategies and best practices for managing and overcoming these hurdles will also be discussed.

FUTURE DATES:
  • October 24 @ 11 a.m. MDT (90 minutes)
  • November 21 @ 11 a.m. MDT (90 minutes)
  • December 5 @ 11 a.m. MDT (90 minutes)

COST:

  • Free to 2020 Harmony Members
  • $10 for non-members
  • Register here: https://form.jotform.com/202595604994264.

If you missed the first session - that's okay! This series is non-sequential, so you can jump right in with this next session.

We received such positive feedback from the first session, and we know this next gathering will be just as wonderful.

If you've already registered - you're all set. You'll receive an email with all of the details in the coming days.

If you haven't yet registered, please do so here: https://form.jotform.com/202595604994264.

Scholarships are available.

Sharing the Sacraments When in-Person Contact Is Not Possible

10/21/2020

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to reduce opportunities for the church to provide in-person pastoral-care ministries and to gather physically for fellowship, worship, and community formation. After extended consideration, the Presidency is providing principles and guidelines for offering the sacraments through online means during the pandemic. These principles and guidelines may be refined in the future as the church lives into its experiences with online ministries.

It is our hope that providing for the sacraments to be shared through online experiences will continue the pastoral-care ministries the church is called to extend into human life, even during this time of physical distancing. It also will provide the church learnings for how to share the sacraments in a world that is becoming more borderless through online connections. May blessings abound as you offer these gifts.

CWM Weekly Virtual Visiting Fellowship

10/21/2020

Picture
Have you checked out Canada West Mission Centre’s “Virtual Visiting Fellowship”?

This is a “program” that has truly become a “community;” actually, two communities! Participants have become real friends in these online communities that include people from across the mission centre and beyond.

Two sessions are offered each week. At least one of them will surely fit into your schedule:
  • Tuesday morning at 11 a.m. Central (Manitoba), 10 a.m. Mountain (Alberta and Saskatchewan), 9 a.m. Pacific (BC).
  • Thursday evening at 9 p.m. Central (Manitoba), 8 p.m. Mountain (Alberta and Saskatchewan), 7 p.m. Pacific (BC).

Our Mission Centre President, Steve Thompson, plans and facilitates these sessions. We share in some introductions and opening comments to set up our time together. Then we engage in a general discussion with reference to topics that have included current events, articles in various periodicals, as well as hymns or scriptures.  We conclude with a prayer for peace, for each other, and for others who need our support. Each session lasts about an hour. This has proven to be an upbeat, positive opportunity to help make up for not being able to visit “live and in person” with our congregation on Sundays.

How to participate:
  • Send an email to steve@communityofchrist.ca to indicate at which time you wish to participate
  • You will receive an email back giving details of how to log onto the Zoom program
  • Zoom connection info will also be circulated earlier before each session through an email reminder to all scheduled participants
  • Then, you log on from your home computer or laptop or tablet or even a smartphone a few minutes before the start time, and
  • ENJOY!

Mark one (or both) of these virtual gatherings on your calendar and plan to attend. We look forward to your participation!
