A Milestone for Daily Bread

​Daily Bread, the popular Community of Christ devotional, recently celebrated a birthday.

The brief stories originally in book form were officially suggested to “strengthen the spiritual foundations on which personal righteousness depends” 1 January, 1949. The first volume, about 5 by 7 inches, included women writers.

To mark its 70th year, Daily Bread stories from throughout the decades are the primary stories used during the month of September.

A foreword by Israel Smith, president of the church in 1949, recommended the devotions to the church membership. Since then, members, officials and others have submitted stories of faith, often inspired by scripture. The former Herald House publication is now a blog, in English, on CofChrist.org.

For the September selections, Katie Harmon-McLaughlin (Spiritual Formation Ministries) and Jane Gardner (presiding evangelist) chose stories that represent our past while carrying threads of connection into the future.

“Daily Bread has a long and rich history in the church,” Harmon-McLaughlin explained. She especially appreciated the articles that illustrated the many hundreds of connections between church members.
