At our annual budget and election of officer’s business meeting we made a historic decision to transfer funds from the local accounts to the world and Canadian church accounts. The financial challenges of the World Church are well-known and in September of this year a call went out from the First Presidency of the church for individuals and congregations to support the church in addressing these challenges. A commitment was requested for prior to the end of 2017. In preparation for this decision our congregation met on October 22, 2017, to discuss the church’s challenge and how we wanted to help. The suggestion was made by a member that we should follow the principle or generosity and tithing and commit 10% of the proceeds of the sale of our Ranchlands property to assist the church. The various specific areas that the church prioritized for funding were also reviewed so that we could make an informed decision at our business meeting. At the business meeting, after considerable discussion on the issue, we approved the transfer of money to the two specific designations that our congregation wanted to support. The transfer of local funds to other uses is a sensitive and serious matter.
Generations of contributors have given money to the church, often for specific projects, notably the building fund to construct local facilities, and that history must be recognised and respected. Concern over the church’s financial management were expressed and continues to be a very serious matter for the church. In the tradition of openness and transparency in our meetings, the full range of opinions were expressed, from grave concern to full support of the world church’s financial management. In the end, a strong majority felt that Calgary was in an enviable position of financial strength to be able to support the World Church in a significant way, and we did. We still have a very healthy financial position for our current and future efforts in Calgary for mission and for acquiring a very functional and welcoming new space, and we look forward to what lies ahead for us, locally and as a vital part of our World Church community.
